One of the main problems with the newer machines is noise in the fuser like the Canon imageRUNNER 1730iF Thumping Noise and Jamming in Fuser Area. Most customers start to flip out and think something serious is going wrong with their machine. Therefore, they rush to the phone and get the local service tech out to diagnose the machine.

As a technician I don’t mind. This problem tends to be an easy service call. One, I think, most customers could solve themselves if they wanted to take five minutes and perform a few easy steps to verify the problem.

What happens inside the machine that leads to the Canon imageRUNNER 1730iF Thumping Noise and Jamming in Fuser Area.

Fuser gears get quite a bit of abuse on these new machines that run at high print speeds. The gears inside most machines are made out of plastic. When the machines motors start turning they slam the gears together and each time that happens the gears wear ever so slightly. Over time, the teeth on the gears get so worn down that they eventually snap off.

When the teeth snap off two things can happen.

  1. If it is just a few teeth then the momentum of the fuser will allow the gears to catch again and you get a thumping or gear noise in the fuser and you start seeing intermittent or constant jams.
  2. If the teeth break in a large area or if they break off completely then you can end up with loud gear noise or no gear noise and the fuser is no longer turning and you get constant jamming.

Now you can just replace the gears but I’ve found that often times when this happens the fuser is already at or near the end of it’s 160,000 life cycle and I can see other signs that it’s probably time to replace the fuser. Below you will find how to remove the fuser to check the gears. The gears are on the right side as it sits in the machine. It tends to be pretty obvious when you pull it out and look at the gears. The one that meshes with the gear on the fuser drive assembly is usually worn down and missing some teeth and there is lots of gear dust on the fuser and inside the cavity of the machine.
