These JC91-00947A, JC96-04534A, Dell KW449 fusing units are rated at 80,000 prints. The machine gives no indication when the fusing unit has reached the end of it’s life. I know when ever I work on these machines I always print of the system data page to see the machines total page count, usually found at the bottom of the page. I also take the fusing units out and look for extreme wear. Below I will give a list of a few things to look for, followed by instructions on the Samsung ML – 3470ND / 3471ND fuser removal.

Extreme Wear Examples
1. Discoloration on the hot roller. Usually they are tan or black. Discoloration usually tends to happen on the edges or middle.
2. Scratches on the hot roller surface like pick finger scratches or thermistor scratches.
3. Gear dust or worn gear teeth.
4. Toner Build up. Usually happens in the middle of the hot roller or on the pressure roller.
5. Wrinkled or flat spotted pressure roller. bottom roller. Usually black or orange.
While the fusing unit might appear fine. They should be replaced once they reach 80,000 prints. I’ve seen them last longer and I’ve also seen them left inside machines for too long. As they wear down they tend to turn harder which can cause internal gears to wear out and I’ve seen the hot rollers melt to the pressure rollers. In these cases you are left with high repair bills that could have been avoided if the fuser was replaced at it’s estimated life.

Samsung ML – 3470ND / 3471ND Fuser Removal Procedure
The service manual says to just pull down the face up cover on the rear cover, step 3 – 4, to remove the fusing assembly. I don’t have one with me to look at but Samsung service manuals are not always right in there steps. Therefore, I’ve  included the rear cover removal steps just in case.
1. Take out the Duplex Unit.
2. Remove the four screws securing the Rear Cover
and then Release the Rear Cover from the Set.
3. To remove the Face Up Cover, first release the
Stopper Strap in the direction of arrow.
4. Unlatch the Face Up Cover from the Rear Cover
and then release the Face Up Cover, as shown
below.
5. Remove the four screws securing the Fuser Ass’y
and then pull the Fuser Ass’y.
