Jam At Top / Jam in Tray – Xerox Phaser 4500 / 4510

Troubleshooting Tips for the Jam at Top and Jam in Tray Messages on the Xerox Phaser 4500 / 4510

One of the most common errors I get called out on these machines is the Jam at Top or Jam in Tray Error Messages. I decided to cover both of these in the same article as they can sometimes be related to the same problem and telling you to install a feed roller kit for the jam in tray message is really not worth writing a whole article for.

Troubleshooting Tips for the Jam at Top and Jam in Tray Message

1. First, if the Jam at Top comes on when you first turn the machine on then you have a jam inside the machine. Open the top cover and remove the toner and check for jammed paper. There is a registration sensor in the middle just below the transfer roller. See the picture below, number 6. Sometimes when you remove a paper jam the sensor flag can catch on the paper ripping some of it off. Usually when this happens you have a small tiny piece of paper stuck on the sensor flag not allowing it to go into the home position. If you can get it out through the front of the machine great. If you can’t it then you will have to remove the registration assembly from the back of the machine. Sometimes you can pull the back cover off and get to the piece of paper, other times you will have to remove the registration assembly. If you do remove the assembly the best thing I can say is to be patient. Getting it loose is pretty easy but it takes a little finesse to get it out.

2. Now the jam at tray message can also be caused by the registration sensor. Sometimes paper debris can get stuck on the sensor flag or in the sensor. When this happens the sensor isn’t blocked and the machine will go to a ready state. However, when paper is fed in it hits the stuck sensor flag or paper and can’t go any further. The nice thing is that these machines have two paper trays. If one tray is not working then try the other tray. If both yield the same result. Paper feeding in but not getting past the registration sensor then check the sensor as described in step 1. If one tray works and the other doesn’t then you can swap feed rollers between the trays or clean the rollers off in the effected tray. If this fixes your problem then I would get a set of feed tires on order. Another thing you can do is to compare the feed rollers between the trays. They should have tread on them. If you see no tread then time to replace.

Conclusion for the Jam at Top or Jam in Tray Error Messages

These are the most common situations where I see these errors. Not ever Jam at Top or Jam in Tray Error is going to be fixed by following the tips in this article. If not, I hope it has helped, at least, eliminate a few possible causes. If you have any additional questions please leave a comment and I will help the best I can.

The links below say Okidata – Several manufactures use these feed rollers. Xerox, Oki, Brother, and Tally to name a few. So while the link says OKI these feed rollers work in the Phaser 4500. This is the best link I could find on Amazon. Xerox tends to charge more for these parts so this is a better value than using the Xerox part number in Amazon.
