The Print Unable  21 Message on these Brother models is a Yellow Laser Diode Failure. I have yet to see this message on these machines but that’s not to say it will never happen. The laser scanner assembly is not known to have a lot of problems on this model but I have had to replace one or two for other issues. Below is a few troubleshooting tips for this error as well as buying options for a replacement laser scanner assembly if you decide to replace it.

Troubleshooting Tips for the Print Unable 21 Message.
1. Turn the machine off then back on. Sometimes it might help to make sure it is plugged straight into a wall out. Also, If it still fails you might want to turn the power off, unplug the power and communication cables and let the machine sit for 15 to 20 minutes.
2. Reseat the laser Scanner Unit Wire Harness connectors.
3. Replace the Laser Scanner Unit
4. Replace the Engine Board
The replacement of the Laser Scanner unit is quite an involved process if your unfamiliar with taking machines apart. If you plan on doing this repair I highly recommend finding the service manual for detailed instructions on how to perform this repair.
