Blurred Print – Xerox Phaser 8500, 8550, 8560, 8560MFP, Workcentre  C2424

Fuzzy or blurred print  in Xerox Phaser 8500, 8550, 8560, 8560MFP, and Workcentre  C2424’s can be a major headache for anybody trying to get work done in their office. While fuzzy or blurred print  doesn’t happen all the time in this model. I see enough questions on forums and other sites so I thought I would take the time to write about it and explain the most common cause and how to fix it.

First off ,I should define what I mean by fuzzy or blurred print. I’m talking about the whole page not just a blurry line or section. I typically get calls where the printer at first only occasionally acts up. The first page or two prints fine then  every page  has fuzzy or blurred print. After awhile it gets to the point where the image quality is poor all the time.

Oil on the drum encoder disk majority of the time is what causes fuzzy or blurred print  in the Xerox Phaser 8500, 8550, 8560, 8560MFP, and Workcentre  C2424. Oil is applied to the drum roller through the PM kit and oil from the bushings leak out and deposits itself in and around the parts adjacent to the drum unit. The encoder disk being right beside the drum, overtime oil is bound to get on the encoder disk.

Drum Encoder Disk   Cleaning Procedure For Fuzzy or Blurred Print on the Xerox Phaser 8500, 8550, 8560

1. Open the Exit Cover.
2. Using either your fingers or a small flathead screwdriver, loosen the Control Panel Cover on the left side, and thenBlurred Print - Xerox Phaser 8500, 8550, 8560, 8560MFP, Workcentre C2424 slide it forward while lifting up to remove it from the printer.
3. Open the Front Door.
4. Remove the rear screw.
5. Pull forward on the latching tab located by the power plug to release it.
6. Release the front latching tab and pull out on the top to remove the Right Side Cover.
7. Remove the Drum cooling fan. Located in the middle, on the right side. Hard to miss. 3 screws hold it in place.
8. Disconnect the Drum heating cable from the relay board. Unsecure it from the disk encoder cover (Clear Plastic Cover that the Drum Heater Cable runs through the Middle) and straighten it out.
9. Remove the Disk Encoder Cover. I believe 4 or 5 plastic tabs hold it in place. 2 around the encoder, (bottom left, about 7 O’clock) and a few more around the edges.
10. Gently pull the cover away from the unit. You don’t want to move the drum cables too much so it might help to hold the drum heater cables in place while sliding the cover away from the machine.

At this point it might help to have a flashlight so you can look at the encoder disk very closely. It doesn’t take much oil to cause fuzzy or blurred print. I usually just use alcohol and a Q-tip and gently wipe it off around the edges. If the encoder is really bad I remove them and clean them. Just be careful because the encoders are fragile. It doesn’t take too much to bend or scratch them. Also the encoder is stuck on the side of the drum with adhesive. So if you remove it make sure you don’t destroy the adhesive. I’ve had to carefully clean the adhesive a few times because the oil had penetrated it so bad.
