The maintenance kit supplies a light coating of oil on the drum unit. The oil allows the ink to be easily lifted off the drum surface. If the drum is not properly lubricated then the print isn’t crisp, looks like it’s not getting enough ink, and down the page you will find left over ink giving you the Xerox ColorQube 8570, 8870, 8580, 8880, 8700, 8900 Dirty Print or ghosting image on the next page.
Unlike previous models these machines have the wiper blade located inside the machine. The blade cleans off left over ink and oil off the drum. Overtime they get a lot of build up on them and quite frankly get disgusting. Once they get too much build up on them they prevent the maintenance kit from properly oiling the drum, when this happens you will get dirty print or ghosting.
Now, I’ve been able to clean a few of them off and get them working again. Although, on a few of them, I started getting oil streaks as the blade was trashed. So I fixed one problem but produced another. With these blades getting to be around 3 years old, its probably just best to replace them. Below you will find the replacement instructions.
