Below you will find repair advice for the Gestetner SP3200SF Grinding Noise and Jamming inside of the machine. Lately, I’ve been seeing and hearing more noise come from the rear of these machines and have been called out for noise issues and jamming underneath the toner cartridge. In this article I’d like to talk about the issue I’ve been running into and how to go about fixing it.

Note : There are many things that can cause similar issues. Worn separation pads, pick up rollers, and solenoids can all cause identical situations, look for other articles on these particular problems. In this article, I’m focusing on fuser issues.

Situation
OK, the fuser drive motors in these machines aren’t the strongest motors out there. It doesn’t take much to bind them up and a worn fuser that starts to turn hard can cause the motor to lock up. What I usually hear is that the machine makes horrible noises if it sits for a period of time. After a few paper jams inside the machine it starts working the way it should. However, once it sits for a period of time and intermittently it does the same thing.

Problem
The fusers in these units start to turn hard as they age. Whether it be the hot roller bushings or the pressure roller expanding they just turn hard and cause the fuser drive motor to lock up. However, once it heats up, it frees it up enough to turn but can occasionally lock up again when paper starts feeding through it. I’ve compared new ones to used ones and there is quite a difference in the amount of force it take to turn them. New ones turn rather easy while older ones take some force.

Solution
Replace the fusing unit. The estimated life of these fusers is around 80,000 prints. You can find this by printing the system data page. It is found near the bottom of the page. However, age has something to do with it too. I just replaced two on different machines and one had 43,000 prints and the other had 95,000 prints. The replacement procedure is quite easy and you can find the illustrated instructions by clicking on the link below. Replacing the fuser tends to take care of quite a few issues and tends to make the machine run quieter.
