Diagnostic Tips for the  Lexmark T644, T642, T640 Error Code 936.00  Mirror Motor Speed Issues

The  Lexmark T644, T642, T640 Error Code 936.00 message happens when the mirror motor fails to get up to speed. If you ever have watched how the printhead works then you would be amazed this type of error doesn’t happen more often. Typically, when I see these errors it’s in dirty environments where dirt and dust can work it’s way into the printhead area. They keep these units sealed off pretty good but over time the dirt and dust finds a way in. Below you will find a few tips that might help take care of this issue along with links to purchase a replacement printhead if needed. Finally, at the bottom of the page you will find a link to the removal and replacement instructions if that is your next course of action.

Additional Diagnostic Tips

1. Turn the machine off then back on. A sudden loss of power or if the machine gets moved suddenly you can accidentally get printhead error messages on the display.

2. Listen as the machine warms up to print. When the mirror motor has speed issues its usually accompanied by out of the ordinary noises. Sometimes when the mirror motor starts up it can create a high pitched squealing noise that makes you want to turn the machine off immediately, other times it can make a noise that some describe like an airplane taking off. You get the point, it’s loud and not ordinary. If you hear sounds like that and then is followed by a Error Code 936.00 on the display then you probably need to replace the printhead.

3. Lexmark would not recommend this but if you want to watch the printhead work then you can remove the covers and the lid to the printhead, close the doors up, plug the machine back in, get it to a ready state then tell it to print. You then can watch the printhead work. Now the printhead is a laser so there is tons of warnings about it and the damage it can do to your eyes if looked at. Like I said, Lexmark and other manufactures don’t recommend doing this but if you know what your doing then it shouldn’t be that bad.

4. I’ve never done it on this model but on most mirror motors you can take them apart and clean the rod and bushings then lubricated them with a light machine oil. This might get the machine back up in running. Personally, in my experience, if this works I still replace the unit. It seems like every time I thought I had a machine fixed by doing this I get a call back saying it has failed again. So I just replace them.

5. Replace the printhead.
