Instructions for the  Lexmark T644, T642, T640 Error Code 933.00 Motor Lock

The mirror motor in these machine operate at amazing speeds. As the print speed increase so have the mirror motor speeds. If you’ve ever taken one apart it is pretty incredible how they work. Over time or in dirty environments dirt and debris can get down in the motor shaft and bushings. On some machines, it seems they don’t put enough lubrication in the bushing to begin with. Anyway, the result of a dried out or other debris in the mirror motor assembly will lead to a motor lock error. Additional  Troubleshooting Tips

1. Turn the machine off then back on. If the machine gets moved or gets a bump while printing it might get an odd error like this. Resetting the machine will fix the problem if it was accidental. As usual, if it happens once or twice a year your good. If it happens once or twice in a 3 month period, it’s probably time to replace the printhead.

2. Listen for a loud noise when it goes to print. Most new machines the printhead doesn’t turn on when you first turn the machine on. However, when you go to print it starts up. That’s usually the first noise you hear when it comes to life. When I bushing is dry or dirty it can make an extremely loud high pitch noise or a loud humming noise. If you hear one of those sounds followed by this error then printhead replacement is most likely needed.

3. Manufactures don’t recommend this as there is a laser in the printhead that can damage your eyes if looked at. But on most machines you can remove the covers and the printhead cover, seen in the picture above, and plug the machine back in. Make sure the front covers are closed and the machine is at a ready state. Tell the machine to do a print job. The motor should turn on and come up to a steady speed. If it doesn’t then you know for sure you have an issue. Again, the manufacture warns against this. So don’t say I didn’t warn you.

4. I haven’t taken one of these apart but on most laser scanner assemblies you can take the motors apart. On some models if you take the motor apart and clean the shaft and bushings out then lubricate them with a light machine oil you can sometimes get them to work again. I only recommend doing this if you have experience in copier and printer repair. Most times if I get the machine to work by this method I still replace the part. Most times this is just a temporary fix and about the time you think the customer isn’t going to call you back, they do. So it is just better to confirm the problem, get it working, then return to replace the part. Better for your reputation and better for the customer.

5. Replace the Printhead.
