HP M603, M601, M602 Paper Jam Issues and Roller Replacement

Repair Advice for the  HP M603, M601, M602 Paper Jam Issues and Roller Replacement

Probably the number one reason why I see these machines is paper jam issues. In most cases, paper jam issues happen because the paper doesn’t make it out of the paper tray. Why does the paper not get out of the paper tray? Because the feed rollers are worn out and need replaced. Below you will find tips for  HP M603, M601, M602 Paper Jam Issues and Roller Replacement instructions if you decide it is time to get those worn out rollers replaced.

The machine has two feed separation roller and one pick up roller per cassette tray. The feed / separation rollers are always moving so they wear more than the pick up roller which only moves to do the initial advancement of the paper. Therefore the pick up roller doesn’t need to be replaced as much as the feed separation rollers. The rollers  have the same tread on them so if you are wondering if your feed rollers are worn out then you can remove all three rollers and compare the tread. Typically, you don’t need to do that. The rollers are like your cars feed tires. They have tread on them. When they wear down the tread wears down and eventually disappears and they don’t feed right. If your paper is not making it out of the tray and you have no tread on your feed tires then the first step is to replace the feed tires.

Note : If your paper stop is too far forward in the tray it can cause similar paper jam issues. Remove the paper and make sure the mark on the paper stop matches the mark on the bottom of the cassette tray.

CAUTION:  Most manufactures recommend that you try to avoid touching the rubber surface of the rollers because the oil or dirt on your fingers can lead to print quality issues and premature roller failure.
1. Remove the cassette tray  and place it on a level work surface. Locate and open the spring-loaded cover that  is next to the roller in the cassette tray.

3. Move the front of the product to the edge of the work surface for better access to the remaining pickup and feed rollers. To find the rollers, look up into the inside of the opening that was created  when you removed Tray 2.
WARNING! Do not allow the front of the product to extend beyond the edge of the work  surface. The product can become unbalanced and fall, which can cause damage to the product or  personal injury to the service technician.
4. Pinch the locking tab on the left side of the feed roller (the front top roller below). Slide the roller off of the shaft. Repeat this step for the pickup roller (the bottom roller below).

Reinstallation tip You might have to rotate the roller to gain access to the locking tab.

Warning : Make sure that the rollers click in place when you install them on the roller shaft. Because this procedure is not difficult it is easy to get a little careless and fly through the replacement. If you don’t get the rollers locked in place they will work for a while but over time drift out of place and not turn anymore. Sometimes this will lead to constant jams and other times it might lead to occasional jams. The main thing is to just double check and make sure it is done right and clicked into place.
