Repair Tips for the Machine Error 76 on the Brother MFC 8860, 8460, 8660, 8870 – DCP 8065, 8060
These machines aren’t as famous for their Machine Error 76 messages as some of the earlier Brother models but it still happens. This error means the machine has read an overheat situation in the fusing Assembly and has shut down to avoid possible damage to the unit.
1. Turn the machine off and let it sit 15 to 30 minutes.
2. Try the manual reset procedure.
Make sure the fuser has cooled for 15 to 30 minutes
To manually reset Press the Menu, *, 2, 8, 6, 4 buttons. Must be done in about 5 seconds so don’t try to read the control panel and it might take you a time or two to get into maintenance mode. If done correctly the display will flash Maintenance and the lights on the control panel will blink on and off. To reset the machine in Maintenance Mode press 9,9. Â The machine will reset and start the normal warm up procedure. 99% of the time this fixes the problem.
3. Remove the fuser and clean the thermistors

The service manual says to replace the thermistor. The thermistor is not available for sale and the whole fuser needs to be ordered. About your only option is to clean the thermistor. The thermistors ride against the hot roller surface and over time debris builds up on the thermistors. When this happens the thermistors give false readings. One might want the fuser to heat up while the other thinks its fine leading to a false overheat reading.
