Drum End Soon – Error Code 1E – Brother 8480, 8890, 8080, 8085

How to Resolve the Drum End Soon Message on the Brother MFC- 8480, 8890, DCP- 8080, 8085

Really this problem is one of the easiest to fix and one of the most common problems I run into. So if your reading this and start to feel dumb, don’t worry, I can’t tell you the number of calls we get with people asking this question. Unlike replacing a toner cartridge, the Drum message will not automatically go away when a new one is installed. In order to clear the Drum End Soon Message you have manually reset the drum counter in one of the two ways listed below. Most the time these instructions can be found on the sheet of paper you throw away when you open up the new drum unit.

The Drum Life on these machines is rated at 25,000 prints. If you use OEM Drums and Toner cartridges the drums on these units tend to last past its life. Usually the machines do not stop working with Drum End Soon messages so I tell customers to buy a new drum and keep it on hand and replace the drum when print quality starts to decline. If you use third party drums and toners the units tend to fail before their estimated life.
