Diagnostic Aids for Troubleshooting the Error Code 83 – Drum Error

On the 8000 series Brother machines I don’t run into the Drum Error code 83 too often. I see it more on the 7000 and 2000 series modes. Majority of the time when I see these errors on any Brother model its because either the machine is in a real dirty environment, the drum has needed replaced and the customer either didn’t replace the drum or didn’t reset the counter, and finally third party cartridges.

When too much dirt or debris gets on the corona wire these machines will throw a drum error. In theory you should be able to remove the drum and slide the blue corona wire cleaner back and forth 5 to 10 times and the machine should work again. Note: This should be done when you periodically replace the toner cartridge. When ever I clean a machine I like to blow the charge grid out and wipe the corona wire off with a damp Q-tip. This seems to do a better job than the blue tab. In severe cases I will remove and clean the charge grid separately.

I’d say 50% of the time cleaning the corona wire fails to fix the message or it will fix it for a short time then the message will reappear. Most times you have to replace the drum unit. What I get called out on with these errors is that customers replace the drum unit and forget to reset the counter. If you put a new drum in then you need to reset the counter in order to clear the drum error message so follow the instructions below for the reset procedure. If replacing the drum and resetting the counter doesn’t fix your problem then I’ve also listed the service manual instructions below for a little more detail.

Actual Message on Display – Drum Error Open the Front Cover, replace the Drum Unit. Refer to the User’s Guide for instructions.
Failure of discharge detection

1. Replace the Drum Unit

2. The double counter value of the life is raised after the occurrence of the error 50 drum unit reached its life. Then the discharge is produced by the dirt of the corona wire and the error 83 appears by detecting the dirt of the electrification current of the HVPS PCB.
Note : When the error 83 is appeared, the performance of the drum unit cannot be maintained. Stop use of the drum so that the printing quality deteriorates.
3. If replacing the drum unit and reset doesn’t work then replace the main board.

Drum Reset Procedure
There are two ways to reset the drum counter
First Way
1. Open the front door like you are going to change the drum or toner.
2. Press the Clear/Back Button
3. Display will read Replace Drum? 1.Yes 2.No
4. Select 1.Yes and press the OK button
Second Way
1. Press the 3 and 9 button at the same time
2. Display will read Reset Menu Select Drum and press OK
3. Display will read Reset Menu Drum 1.Reset 2.Exit Select 1.Reset and press OK
