Paper Jam Tray 2 Pickup Roller, Sep. Pad Replacement HP 2400 Series

Troubleshooting Tips and Pick Up Roller, Sep. Pad Replacement on the HP 2400 Series Printer

Like just about any HP machine the most common issue that occurs  is the paper jam tray 2 problem. Majority of the time this problem is related to the pick up roller and sep. pad getting worn out. These parts generally wear out at about 50,000 to 75,000 prints. In this article I’d like to talk about a few troubleshooting tips to help diagnose the problem and figure out the next course of action.

1. The most common sign of a worn out feed roller is that it fails to pick up the paper. When the pick up roller starts to fail the printer attempts to pick up the paper 2 to 3 times then reports a paper jam. Most times this doesn’t happen over night. Usually there are warning signs. More frequent jams and if your paying attention, the machine will make a few attempts to pick the paper up before it finally feeds.

2. The easiest thing to do is to check the feed roller. The roller has tread on it, like a tire. Once the tread has worn away if fails to pick the paper up. The roller is D shaped so a third of the roller is never used so if you remove the roller you can see what the tread should look like compared to what the part the makes contact with the paper looks like. If there is not tread on the rounded D part of the roller then the roller needs replaced. One way to further test is to clean the surface of the roller off with a damp cloth or rotate the rubber to expose the part of the roller that still has tread and try printing again. If the machine starts working properly after reinstalling then your pick up roller is on its way out and a replacement should be ordered.

3. If the tread looks good and it still fails to feed from the tray then pull the paper out and check the paper stop in the back of the machine. make sure the mark on the paper stop matches up with the proper size paper mark located on the bottom of the tray. To far forward or backwards will result in jam issues. Also check the paper. One problem I run into a lot is improperly installed paper. If one of the edges of paper gets folded up in the front of the tray. It will cause the paper to lift improperly when installed. Remove the paper check for creased or bent paper, remove, reinstall and test the machine.

4. If everything above has failed to fix the problem then the next step is to replace the pick up roller and sep pad for further troubleshooting. Below is the replacement instructions along with a link to purchase a roller kit.
