51.10 Error in the HP Laserjet P4015, P4014, and P4510 Printer

Troubleshooting 51.10 Error Code HP Laserjet P4015, P4014, and P4510 Printer

While I haven’t yet seen the 51.10 error on the HP P4014, and P4015 I thought I  would write about it briefly and inform end users and technicians how to troubleshoot, diagnose and replace the laser scanner assembly if needed.

Alright the laser scanner is what  writes the image to the drum unit inside the toner cartridge. In most cases the  51.10 error will not show up right away on the machine when it first warms up. Typically the error will show up when the machine is told to print. In general the laser unit motor does not rotate during startup on most HP’s. So after the machine is told to print it starts up the laser scanner motor and if it doesn’t get up to the correct operating speed in time it will display this error. Usually you can hear the motor get up to speed if it’s functioning right. The laser scanner assembly is right below the top cover in the middle of the machine to give you a better idea of where to listen to for the motor to start up.HP P4015 Top Cover Removal photo

Below is what the service manual has to say about the diagnosing the 51.10 error. Most likely if you see this error the laser scanner will have to be replaced even if you turn the machine off and back on. It might start printing again but I’ve rarely seen the error happen once and not happen again. The few I’ve decided to wait and see if it happens again, I’ve always had to replace.

1. From the DIAGNOSTICS menu, run the laser/scanner motor component test. Verify that you can hear motor rotate.
2. If you cannot hear the motor rotate, verify that the connections to connector J86 and connector J93 on the DC
controller PCA are firmly seated.
3. Verify that the wiring harness at the laser/scanner assembly is securely attached.
4. If the error persists, replace the laser/scanner assembly.
