Fuzzy Print – HP Laserjet 4240, 4250 and 4350 Printers

What Happens to Create Fuzzy Print in the HP 4240 , 4250 and 4350 Printers

Ran in yet another 4240 showing fuzzy print across the whole page today so I thought I would write about what causes this situation and how to go about fixing this problem when it happens.

Fuzzy Print Problem
Majority of the time I get a customer calling in for service that says the page is coming out ok but the print is hard to read,  looks fuzzy or blurred. I’ve even gone out to fix machines for other problems and seen this happening  and the customer doesn’t even realize it. I guess some people just have very poor eye site.

I’ve never seen this on OEM fusers. It’s always been on rebuilt fusing assemblies and I’ve seen it from a wide variety of suppliers so I’m not going to call out one particular. I’m guessing at some point or another they all have had to replace defective  fusing units  for this problem. It seems that the fixing film doesn’t rotate properly on the heating element. Seems like either the film is slipping occasionally, moving slower than the paper so the print smears on the paper as it goes through or isn’t really moving at all. I’ve taken them apart before and tried to lubricate  them but I usually end up with the same result shortly after. I’ve given up on trying to fix them so  I typically just replace the fusers  when I see this problem happen. I believe that the grease inside the fuser  gums up and causes the fixing film to drag on the heating element. I also think a lot of it happens because majority of the time these companies don’t replace the heating elements in these machines. If you ever have taken a heating element out of a rebuilt fuser  you will notice on most, the surface is scratched and grease likes to build up in the scratches which contributes to the problem. That’s why I think most the time trying to fix it yourself is just a waste of time because to do the job properly a new heating element and fixing film will need installed.

Note: Unplug power and communication cables and allow at least 10 minutes for cool down before fuser removal.
1. Open the rear output bin. Use your finger to squeeze the hinge pin (formatter side) out of its mounting hole.
2. Rotate the output bin away from the printer until the right hinge pin is released, and then remove the output bin.
3. Squeeze the blue fuser release tabs
4. Pull the fuser straight back and out of the printer.

Hopefully this article has helped you solve the blurred or fuzzy print on your HP machine. If you have anymore questions or more advice on this subject,  please leave a comment below.
