57.4 Main Fan Failure Error HP 4200, 4240, and 4250 Printer

Haven’t really seen this error a lot but I figuired I’d write about it since I wrote an article about the noise. Obviously the  57.4 error is related to the main cooling fan on the left side. If your lucky something is just blocking the fan and it can be easily removed and your back in business. However, if the error is related to the 57.4 Main Fan Failure going out the instructions below will help you remove and replace it and get the printer back up and running. Pretty easy repair when it comes down to it.

Troubleshooting the 57.4 Main Fan Failure ErrorHP 4200, 4240, 4250 fan noise photo

Not much to troubleshoot here. Pretty much remove the leftside cover check for obstructions. If you don’t see any hold the fan blades and blow it out if it appears dirty and try to manually move it by hand checking for resistance. At this point if you want you could just install the top cover and turn the machine on and watch and see what the cooling fan does. If your not familiar with electronics just be careful not to touch anything electrical while testing.

Main Fan Removal in the HP Laserjet 4200, 4240, and 4250

Accessory covers
Note Accessory covers will not be in place if any installed accessories (for example, the optional stapler/stacker) have been removed to service the printer.
1. Grasp the top accessory cover (the mounting position for the optional stapler/stacker or stacker). Rotate the cover toward the front of the printer to release it, and then lift it up to remove it.

Top cover
2. Remove the two rear mounting screws.
3. Open the print-cartridge door. Remove the front two mounting screws.

Formatter cover
1. Grasp the formatter cover.
2. Pull the cover straight back and away from the printer.
At this point the service manual recommends removing the top cover totally. I just lift it up slightly and move it just enough so I can remove the left-side cover. No sense in making more work for yourself. Just make sure you don’t get overboard and unplug the control panel cable on the right side.

1. Release the upper and front left-side cover-locking tabs.
3. Rotate the top of the cover away from the printer and lift the cover up to remove it.

Main cooling fan (left side)
1. Remove two screws. Remove the power-supply shield.
2. Unplug the fan connector and thermistor sensor connector from the power supply.
3. Remove one screw. Slide the thermistor sensor bar to the right to release it. Remove the thermistor sensor bar.
4. Release the two fan-locking tabs. Slide the fan out of its mounting bracket.
Reinstall note When you install the fan, the air must flow into the printer. Verify that the airflow arrows that are embossed on the fan body point into the printer.
CAUTION When you install the fan, do not apply too much pressure to the wire-harness connectors when they are connected to the power supply. Too much pressure might snap off the soldered connectors on the power supply.

Conclusion about the 57.4 Main Fan Failure

Pretty straight foward repair on this error. Not really seeing a lot of this error now but I imagine in the next few years as these machines age more and more this will become a common error and lots of people will be replacing these fans for the 57.4 Main Fan Failure error.
