58.20 – 58.2  Printer Error – HP Laserjet 4200, 4250, 4300, 4350

I’ve seen the 58.20 or 58.2  printer error before on the HP laserjet 4200, 4240,  4250, 4300, and 4350 printers. I decided to look it up to see how popular it is before I wrote about it and there seems to be some controversy over this error. The service manual says it’s a 58.2 printer error while several people report the error showing up as a 58.20  printer error. Honestly, I don’t remember  if the display read 58.20 or 58.2 printer error on  the machines I had to replace the temperature sensor on. Anyway, in this article I would like to talk a little bit about the temperature sensor error and how to go about replacing it when it happens.

What the 58.20 – 58.2 Printer Error Means in the HP Laserjet 4200, 4250,  4240,  4300, 4350 Printers

Ok I wanted to also see what exactly the air temperature sensor did. Again the service manual is not very good at relating this information. Is it to measure the outside temp to make sure its in the correct environment, like some  high-end  machines do, or is it to measure the heat coming out? After thinking more about it, I believe it could be  both. According  to the service manual the left cooling fan only operates when the machine starts, when printing, or when the temperature inside the printer is too high. Given the temperature sensor sits just outside the left cooling fan it has to measure the temperature coming out of the machine. Also, I did find another reference to the sensor that reports that it measures the outside temperature to tell the machine how long to take to warm up the fuser. It might be right. The only part that seems odd to me is that the thermistor  inside the fuser  is supposed to  measure the  fuser temperature and tell the machine when its ready to print. Anyway below is what the service manual has to say about troubleshooting the 58.20 – 58.2 printer error.

What the  HP Laserjet 4200, 4240, 4250, 4300, 4350 Service Manual says about the 58.20 – 58.2 Printer Error
1 Turn the printer off and then on.
2 Reconnect the connector between the air-temperature sensor (the bar mounted across the main cooling fan
on the left side of the printer) and the power supply.
3 Replace the air-temperature sensor.
4 Replace the power-supply assembly.

Pretty straight forward. That’s really about all you can do as there really is  very little info about the temperature sensor in the service manual. It’s easy to get to, reseat, and replace. I have read where people remove the power supply and after reinstallation they get the 58.20 – 58.2 printer  error because they forget to plug it back in.

Removal Procedure of the temperature sensor for the 58.20 – 58.2 Printer Error

Accessory covers and the tray 2 extension door
1. Grasp the top accessory cover (the mounting position for the optional stapler/stacker or stacker). Rotate the cover toward the front of the printer to release it, and then lift it up to remove it.

Formatter cover
1. Grasp the formatter cover.
2. Pull the cover straight back and away from the printer.

Top cover
1. Remove the top accessory cover.
2. Remove the two rear mounting screws.
3. Open the print-cartridge door. Remove the front two mounting screws.
4. Use needle-nose pliers to release the print-cartridge drive-arm.
5. Open tray 1 and the rear door. Grasp the top cover and carefully rotate the left edge up and away from the printer. Do not apply stress to the control-panel wire-harness when rotating the top cover away from the printer.
6. Disconnect the control-panel wire-harness from the DC controller PCA. Remove the top cover
When the top cover is re-installed, make sure that the wire-harnesses are properly routed through the cable guides. If the wire-harnesses are not properly routed, they can be damaged when the top cover is installed.

Left-side cover
1. Release the upper and front left-side cover-locking tabs.
2. Rotate the top of the cover away from the printer and lift the cover up to remove it.

Air Temperature Sensor (left side)
2. Remove 2 screws. Remove the power-supply shield.
3. Unplug the thermistor sensor connector from the power supply.
