ADF Noise – Brother MFC 8480DN, 8890DW, DCP 8080, and 8085

ADF Noise – Brother MFC 8480DN, 8890DW, DCP 8080, and 8085

Unfortunately the newer Brother MFC and DCP 8000 series models are prone to several different noises.  ADF noise causing mild grinding and groans. Plus fuser  area noises including squeaks and popping sounds.  Some Brother machines  just have one noise while others have several. In this article I’m going to focus on a few of the ADF noise problems generated by the document feeder located above the copy unit.
ADF-Automatic Document Feeder – Located above the copier glass it’s the device that you can put multiple pages in and copy or fax.

Two ADF noise  Problems Associated With the Brother MFC 8480DN, 8890DW, DCP 8080, and 8085

Two noises typically are associated with the ADF unit: 1. Groan noise 2. Light grinding noise
The groan ADF noise is usually a result of the secondary pick up roller (circled in Yellow) rubbing on the separation pad located below it. One way to test this is to feed multiple copies through the ADF. You probably will not hear the sound at first but after the last copy feeds in and passes through the pick section the ADF noise will start then stop once the last paper has fed out of the unit. After the last page feeds through the pick up section the rollers are still rotating. The secondary roller is rubbing on the rubber separation pad resulting in a groan noise. Not really a problem but can be very annoying. What I’ve noticed, in my experience, is that the noise typically gets worse when you clean the roller. I use toADF noise  go onsite fix a reported problem and then clean the rest of the machine. Part of cleaning the machine was cleaning the two pick up feed rollers (LS1030001) in the ADF. After cleaning the two rollers a lot of the time I found I would have a groan noise that wasn’t there before. Sometimes the ADF noise can get really loud, you can ask our store manager after I cleaned her machine. After adjusting and playing with it I could get the noise to be quieter but was a huge pain to deal with given the fact it wasn’t doing it before. What I’ve done in the last few years is to make sure I clean the first pick up roller and the roller just past the secondary feed roller unless it’s an extremely dirty environment or the are having severe feed problems in the ADF unit. So far that’s been my solution for that problem. One thing that I did find that might help if you get stuck with this problem is the two leaf springs on either side of the separation pad. I’m not sure what they do but bending them down a little so they don’t ride on the feed roller has been able to quiet the groan ADF noise somewhat.

The second ADF noise I’ve heard is a result of the one  of the spring clutches (Circled In Red) slipping slightly over its bushing  and bending the spring wrong. I haven’t seen it cause problems but it does result in a rattle or mild grinding sound as the paper feeds through the pick up section. I’ve reseated  the spring and added some light weight lubrication to one but was called back when the noise returned about a month later. The first few I had were under warranty so I just replaced the ADF pick up assembly (LS1030001). Others I have given the customer the option to replace it or live with the ADF noise as it doesn’t really seem to be causing a problem. So if your  Brother MFC 8480DN, 8890DW, DCP 8080,or 8085 is experiencing this ADF noise look in this area if you have a slight gear sound. Replacement is not that hard. You just have to remove the two ADF  side covers, remove  the bushing securing the ADF pick up roller assembly and remove the whole pick up assembly shown in the picture above.

Conclusion about the ADF Noise in the Brother MFC 8480DN, 8890DW, DCP 8080, and 8085

Alright that’s all I have to say about ADF noise is these machines. I’m sure other sounds and problems can occur inside these units but these are the main ones I’ve been faced with on service calls related to ADF noise. Hopefully the information in this article has helped other better pinpoint were to look when dealing with these sounds.
