Brother MFC 8480DN, MFC 8890DW, DCP 8080DN, 8085DN –  Print Issues

I ran into a Brother MFC 8480 printer the other day that was having  print issues when trying to print. When the customer wentprint issues to print the machine  would typically print part of the first page, stop in the middle, reprint the first page, and on most occasions print the document several times. After all was said and done the customer had their whole document but it took twice as long to print and they had several wasted pages. Like every other problem I run into, if I see it then I’m sure thousands of other are having the same situation. In this article I will discuss troubleshooting tips for  print issues in the Brother MFC 8480, 8890, DCP 8080, and 8085 and how I went about resolving this service call.

Troubleshooting Network Issues on the Brother MFC 8480DN, MFC 8890DW, DCP 8080DN, 8085DN –  Print Issues

First, thing to do when troubleshooting  network or  print issues is to ask questions.
What exactly does it do?
Does it just do it from one PC?
How often does it do it?
Does it do it from several applications or one specific?

If it just does it from one application or one PC then we are in luck and we can further troubleshoot it by just reinstalling the driver on that PC and go from there. I’m not going to get into further details on single PC print issues  because in this article I’m focusing on  print issues related to several machines and with everything that is being printed.

Alright, in the case of my service call every  computer and software program including windows test pages from the driver print properties were resulting in print issues. So I could eliminate a driver problem and a specific software program. The next step was to print off reports and make some copies from the machine to test the internal functionality of the machine. In this case everything was working fine. All the reports printed out the way they should and the copier section did its job. Next was to print of the network configuration report. At the bottom of the report you will find a section showing the network statistics. Received  and transmitted packets are good. In my case I was getting bad packets  and receiver  overruns. I’ve seen bad packets before in faulty HP jetdirects. I’ve never seen the receiver  overrun errors before so I decided to call Brother ASP support. Their only advice was to check network cables, hubs, and other network connections and maybe  just maybe the mainboard  on the machine but it was very unlikely. I will not rule out the other options because that’s the first thing I recommended  to the customer. However, I had a used mainboard  at my disposal so I told my customer if they wanted to purchase it I would install it in the machine to see if it fixed their print issues. The rest is history. Replacing the mainboard fixed the print issues and everything was restored to working order.
